“Opposites attract. Opposites attack.” Herakut is a collaboration of the aliases Hera and Akut, two graffiti artists, one male and one female from Frankfurt and Erfurt respectively. Working together since 2004, Herakut combine deeply contrasting styles – Akut’s photorealist spray paint, with Hera’s more traditional painterly methods – to create highly stylised street works. Often after a background done by Hera, Akut creates a detailed layer for a face without knowing what kind of body Hera will add. The mixing of two very different styles often results in the finished piece delivering a uniquely schizophrenic feel. With each new show, Herakut are creating an increasingly bold, unique body of work – a strangely beautiful union of Akut’s consummate spray painting and Hera’s distinctively scratchy, sexualised, everyday world…
