There is little that can compare with the presence, personality and pride of the magnificent capercaillie. Living in the beautiful native Caledonian pine forests of northern Scotland, this totemic species represents a unique part of our rich natural heritage.
Yet these special birds are extremely vulnerable. There are now as few as 2,000 individual birds left compared to around 20,000 in the 1970s. Critical loss of habitat, deer fence collisions, predation, disturbance and poor weather during the breeding season have all taken their toll – unless we act now, the Capercaillie may be lost forever from these shores.
